Why Did Jesus Ask “Why Are Ye Fearful” in Matthew 8:26?
JESUS CHRISTBIBLE INSIGHTS

In life, we inevitably encounter hard times. When faced with adversity, our natural tendency is to react to the immediate challenges. It's human nature to struggle through tragedy or crisis and experience pain and grief. Our reaction often leads us to forget that these difficult circumstances are only temporary. We tend to perceive the middle of the story as the end, overlooking the fact that there's more to come.
I vividly remember teaching this valuable lesson while watching a movie with my kids. I used to point out that in a good story, around two-thirds or three-fourths into the plot, the main character encounters a "dark night of the soul" moment. Everything seems lost, and redemption appears impossible. I'd pause the movie at this crucial point and jokingly suggest that the story had concluded. My kids would vehemently protest, exclaiming, "Dad, the movie isn't over! There's still time left!"
As followers of Jesus, we are blessed with the gift of faith, which offers hope beyond our current circumstances. This lesson isn't always easy to grasp, as it often requires challenging situations to truly understand. Jesus' disciples themselves had to experience such a pivotal moment to realize the need for profound faith.
Context of Matthew 8:26
In the intriguing narrative of Matthew chapter 8, we witness Jesus and his disciples embarking on a transformative journey across the vast Sea of Galilee. A dangerous storm hits while Jesus sleeps in the boat.
The disciples wake him up, afraid for their lives: “And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.” (KJV Matthew 8:25)
It is then that Jesus says, “Why are ye fearful, o ye of little faith?” (KJV Matthew 8:26) Then he gets up and rebukes the storm. The wind and waves are calm. And the disciples are amazed.

The Profound Meaning Behind Jesus' Question: "Why Are Ye Faithful, Oh Ye of Little Faith"
We often experience spiritual highs when we witness miracles, see people coming to faith, feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in worship, or receive new revelations from God. During these moments, it's easy to have unwavering faith and offer praise to God.
However, shortly after these uplifting experiences, we may find ourselves facing unexpected challenges, metaphorically speaking, thrown to the lions of life. Recently, my wife and I returned from a mission trip where we witnessed remarkable things happening through God's work. We were filled with gratitude and joy.
Yet, just a day later, while taking our van for routine maintenance, we discovered that it needed significant repairs, which was not part of our financial plan. A few days later, the check engine light in our other vehicle illuminated, leading to more financial strain and concerns. These situations align with the scriptural truth that in this world, we will encounter trials.

In these moments, it is essential to remember that Jesus never guaranteed a trouble-free life for His followers; instead, He assured us that challenges would come. However, He also promised that we can find courage because He has overcome the world.
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (KJV John 16:33).
The disciples, experienced fishermen, understood the severity of the storm they faced. True faith acknowledges the seriousness of our difficulties but views them in the context of a mighty, eternal God. It doesn't minimize our struggles but provides the perspective needed to endure without fear.
Did Jesus expect the disciples to calm the storm? Perhaps not. What He did expect was for them to recognize His presence with them. They had witnessed His miraculous works and had the perfect example of how to respond to challenges - with trust and faith in Him.
Similarly, when my wife and I encountered unexpected car and financial issues, we recognized it as a test of our faith. Instead of giving in to worry, we turned to God in prayer and received His message to trust Him and find peace in Him. Despite the uncertainties, we chose to remain anchored in faith, knowing that God was in control.
Faith enables us to see beyond the immediate crisis and focus on the eternal, unseen reality of God's sovereignty. It empowers us to follow Jesus' lead amidst life's storms, guiding us through challenges with confidence and hope.
Lessons from Matthew 8:26
1. Trust in God's Power: The disciples' lack of faith in the storm highlighted their failure to recognize Jesus' authority. We are reminded to rely on God's power rather than our own abilities, acknowledging His sovereignty in every situation.
2. Overcoming Fear: Fear can hinder our trust in God's protection and provision during challenging times. Choosing faith over fear empowers us to lean on God's faithfulness, guiding us through uncertainties with courage.
3. Deepening Our Faith: Jesus calls us to continually grow in our faith through studying His Word, nurturing a personal relationship with Him, and seeking His guidance. This intentional effort allows our faith to mature and strengthen over time.
4. Faith Beyond Sight: Believing in God's promises and unseen work requires faith that transcends what we can physically perceive. Trusting in His sovereignty and unseen workings enables us to navigate life with confidence and hope.
5. Faith During Trials: Maintaining unwavering faith in the face of trials is essential. Challenges test our faith and offer opportunities for growth. Just as Jesus rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith, we are encouraged to trust in God's plan during difficult times.
6. Prayer and Faith: The connection between prayer and faith is significant. Genuine faith in God reinforces our belief that He hears our prayers and will provide according to His will. Prayer expresses our reliance on Him, and faith opens the door to His guidance and provision.
7. Assurance of God's Presence: Jesus calming the storm signifies His presence amidst chaos and His ability to bring peace. Knowing that God is with us through every trial offers comfort and strength. His faithfulness assures us of His care and protection.
Amen.

In times of adversity, let us not lose sight of the bigger picture. Our faith enables us to see God's love, presence, and the ultimate outcome for those who trust in Him. The Bible would stand as a cornerstone of spiritual nourishment, offering profound insights, wisdom, and divine guidance to enrich and deepen our relationship with God. Through enduring faith and hope, we find peace in knowing that God is in control, guiding us through every storm.
