Why Can Pastors Marry but Catholic Priests Cannot?
Pastors may marry because the Bible allows married leaders. Catholic priestly celibacy is a church discipline, not a biblical command, and has exceptions.
The short answer
Pastors can marry because the Bible nowhere forbids church leaders to marry, and most Protestant churches follow Scripture alone on this. Catholic priests in the Latin (Western) Church do not marry because the Church requires celibacy as a discipline, a rule it chose and could change, not a doctrine it claims the Bible commands.
Two different jobs, two different words
A pastor (Latin for “shepherd”) leads, preaches to and cares for a Protestant congregation. A Catholic priest is ordained to celebrate the Mass and the sacraments. Many Protestants avoid the word “priest” for their ministers, because they hold that every believer shares in one priesthood under Christ (1 Peter 2:9).

Marriage was God’s idea before the fall. And the first leaders of the church were not all single. Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law in Peter’s own house:
“And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.” (Matthew 8:14, KJV)
Paul later says Peter (Cephas) and other apostles took their wives with them on their travels:
“Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?” (1 Corinthians 9:5, KJV)

What the Catholic Church actually teaches
Catholic teaching does not say marriage is unworthy of a priest. It says a man who gives up marriage “for the kingdom of heaven’s sake” (Matthew 19:12) can belong wholly to Christ and His people, as Paul describes:
“But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.” (1 Corinthians 7:32-33, KJV)
Celibacy grew over centuries. The Council of Elvira in Spain (around 305) required married clergy to live continently, and the Second Lateran Council (1139) declared marriages attempted by priests invalid. Because it is a discipline, there are exceptions: Eastern Catholic churches ordain married men, and some married Anglican and Lutheran ministers who became Catholic have been ordained priests.
The Orthodox middle path
Eastern Orthodox churches ordain married men as priests and deacons, but a man must marry before ordination, not after. Bishops are chosen from celibate monks.
Why Protestants let pastors marry
At the Reformation, leaders such as Martin Luther, who married Katharina von Bora in 1525, argued that Scripture assumes married leaders. Paul’s list of qualifications for a bishop begins:
“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife…” (1 Timothy 3:2, KJV)
Protestants also cite 1 Timothy 4:3, which warns against teachers “forbidding to marry.” Catholics answer that Paul meant teachers who called marriage itself evil, while the Church honours marriage as a sacrament and only asks celibacy of men who freely seek the priesthood.
What the Bible does not say
Scripture does not command church leaders to marry, nor forbid it. Paul himself was single and called it a gift (1 Corinthians 7:7), and Jesus never married. Both callings are honoured in the New Testament.
