What is the Garden of Eden in the Bible?

The opening book of the Bible, Genesis, presents the creation narrative of the world and humankind by God. Within its initial chapter, we witness the manifestation of God’s words and intentions as He brings forth the heavens, the earth, and all living beings. After creating man, God planted a garden in the east of Eden, and put the man (Adam) into the garden he planted.

“Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.” (KJV Genesis 2:5-8)

The term “Garden of Eden” originates from the term “Gan Eden” in Hebrew language which means Heaven or Paradise.

What does the Garden of Eden look like?

The Bible further describes that a powerful river originating from Eden divided into four distinct streams, nourishing the extensive garden as it flowed downstream. Upon placing Adam and Eve in their idyllic garden abode, God had furnished it abundantly, enveloping them in pristine beauty and fostering harmonious communion with each other, nature, and God. The garden prominently featured two remarkable trees, bearing fruit with extraordinary properties. The fruit from the tree of life offered everlasting sustenance, while the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil bore the consequence of death when consumed. (Genesis 2:9-14)

Where is the Garden of Eden located?

Researchers and experts have sought to use biblical information to pinpoint the precise whereabouts of the Garden. Many have attempted to infer its location between Ethiopia (referred to as Cush) and the fertile crescent in the Middle East, based on references to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

However, it is widely acknowledged that there is no definitive consensus on its location. The Institute for Creation Research (ICR) published an insightful article titled "Where Was The Garden Of Eden Located?" which highlights the challenge of identifying the Garden’s location due to the substantial changes in the world post-flood. The transformative impact of the flood on the earth's geography, possibly altering the course of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, has posed a significant hindrance for scholars, historians, and archaeologists in determining the precise site of the Garden of Eden.
