Buying a house is a major financial commitment. The stress, negotiations, and compromises involved can be overwhelming. In today's competitive market, securing a home often feels like a battle. Yet, even with the challenges, most people agree that the rewards of homeownership are worth the investment.

But what about the ultimate investment: following Jesus Christ? Is the cost truly worth the reward? Many people shy away from the demands of discipleship, fearing the sacrifices it requires. Let's delve into what Jesus tells us about the true price of following Him.

1. Surrendering Personal Possessions

Jesus explicitly tells His followers that they must be willing to renounce everything they own. In Luke 14:33, He states, "So, therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple". This means that our possessions, while they may remain under our stewardship, should never hold a grip on our hearts. We must be prepared to relinquish anything if called upon to do so for the sake of Jesus.

In practical terms, this can feel as overwhelming as purchasing a high-priced home in a costly market. Just as I had to stretch my finances and make bold offers to secure my house, following Jesus requires a similar stretch of our willingness to part with worldly assets, recognizing that in the kingdom of God, the rewards are infinitely greater.

2. Bearing Discomfort and Sacrifice

Jesus doesn't sugarcoat the challenges of discipleship. He openly tells us to prepare for discomfort, as showcased in His statement, "Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:27-28). Bearing one's cross signifies a readiness to suffer, to sacrifice personal comfort, and even to face persecution.

When I offered a low price for my house and requested repairs, I faced the discomfort of possible rejection. Similarly, following Jesus means walking a path where we might encounter rejection, hardship, and sacrifice. However, these sacrifices are not in vain. They are part of our commitment to a greater purpose and a relationship that promises eternal fulfillment.
