“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5, KJV)

1. A prayer for discernment

“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?” (1 Kings 3:9, KJV)

In Hebrew, Solomon’s “understanding heart” is literally a “hearing heart” (lev shomea). He asked first to listen, and the next verse says “the speech pleased the Lord.”

Prayer: Father, give me a hearing heart. Before I decide, help me listen to your Word and tell good from bad. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. A prayer for knowledge

“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.…” (2 Chronicles 16:9, KJV)

A prophet said this to King Asa, who had paid a foreign king for help instead of asking God. Knowledge begins with where we look for it.

Prayer: Lord, I bring my questions to you first, not last. Teach me what I do not know, and make my heart whole toward you. Amen.

“I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.” (Psalm 119:30, KJV)

Prayer: Father, your word is “a lamp unto my feet” (Psalm 119:105). I choose your way of truth today. Open what I read to my understanding. Amen.

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14, KJV)

Wisdom that stays in the head is not yet wisdom. James warns that hearing without doing is “deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).

Prayer: Lord, let my words and my thoughts today please you. Show me one place to obey what I already know, and give me courage to do it. Amen.
